Graduate Certificate in Medical Microbiology
The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology offers a distance education, fully online graduate certificate in medical microbiology. This 11 credit certificate provides basic and advanced courses in medical microbiology, bacteriology, virology, gene therapy, and using the scientific literature. This is a rigorous curriculum that has the same courses taught to our Ph.D. students.

Graduate certificates are an important component of the academic credentialing portfolio for students to receive documented coursework without having to go through the time and financial commitment of obtaining a graduate degree. This graduate certificate could be a preliminary venture into graduate or professional education. For example, the courses can be applied towards the online master’s degree with the affiliated Microbiology and Cell Science department in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences or the on-campus Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. program in the College of Medicine. Alternatively, it could open doors for advancement and/or specialization within a career track.
This is a rigorous curriculum that has the same courses taught to our Ph.D. students. Therefore, it is not intended as remediation for poor undergraduate grades.
(Note: This certificate is managed in conjunction with the Department of Microbiology and Cell Science in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, so you will be directed to its web pages on clicking the link below.)
