Message from the Department Chair

Welcome!

The Department of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology (MGM) is home to top researchers in the areas of virology, human genetics and RNA biology with strengths in both foundational and translational science. Our department is currently home to 23 primary faculty, 9 mission-track faculty, 14 postdocs, 41 graduate students and 98 support staff and undergraduate researchers. We are ranked among the top 10 genetics departments and top 25 microbiology departments among public universities based on NIH funding. Our learners include Ph.D. students, medical students and a large cohort of M.S. students. Be sure to check our online educational offerings as well!

Perhaps most importantly, we are proud of our collegial and collaborative environment and our culture of caring and providing mentoring to allow our faculty, staff and trainees to achieve greatness.

Our DEPARTMENT

The Department plays a central role in several interdisciplinary research programs in the University of Florida College of Medicine. Affiliated centers include the Gene Therapy Center, the Center for Mammalian Genetics, and the University of Florida Brain Institute. Our department takes pride in maintaining a very modern scientific perspective and an extremely collegial atmosphere which together foster creativity and a free exchange of ideas.

Our faculty pursue a diverse family of research interests ranging from mammalian genetics to virology and bacteriology, with a common grounding in molecular biology, molecular genetics and gene therapy. Offerings include quality training for Ph.D. students through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Biomedical Sciences, and for Masters students through the Masters of Science program or the combined Masters of Science/Masters of Business Administration program
